It’s no secret that the Bass Lake and Yosemite area is a haven for artists and artisans. Dozens of art galleries, studios, and specialty stores fill the cities and towns of the region, and draw thousands of artists and art-enthusiasts to the area each year. If you are an artist, an art-lover, or even if you just enjoy viewing or shopping for art of any kind, a visit to the area is a must, and there’s no better time to visit than during the Sierra Art Trails Yosemite Foothills Open Studio Tour.

The Sierra Art Trails Open Studio Tour takes place in a number of homes, studios, businesses, and galleries located in more than a dozen communities in Eastern Madera and Mariposa counties. It is the largest event of its kind in the area. Visitors get the chance to interact with and see artists and artisans at work, demonstrating how they create their jewelry, paintings, sculptures, fiber arts, woodcarvings, ceramics, glass pieces, and more. It’s also a chance for visitors to purchase unique pieces directly from the people who made them.
This year’s Sierra Art Trails Open Studio Tour is celebrating it’s 14th year of supporting the arts in the Yosemite Foothills. The event kicks off on Friday, September 30th, and runs until Sunday, October 2nd. The price of admission is $20, and includes a ticket for two people and a catalog listing the artists and their viewing locations along the trail, as well as a map. Catalogs, which come with a ticket for two guests, can be purchased online now, or at a number of studios, stores, and visitors centers in the area. A complete list of places to purchase catalogs and tickets is available here.

A Preview Exhibit opened Saturday, September 10th, and will last until the Open House Tour weekend. Visitors can stop by the Stellar Gallery in Oakhurst between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., Wednesday through Monday. The exhibit is a great chance to check out the kind of art you’ll see during the open house, and to plan your route to the galleries and studios that you’d like to visit during the open house weekend.
Sierra Art Trails is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting local artists and artisans. Besides their yearly open house tour, they also offer workshops, demonstrations, lectures, special exhibits, and more, open to artists as well as to the general public. Many of their events help to raise funds for student scholarships and sponsorships, as well as school art programs, public art programs, and more.
