If you think that spring and summer are the only times to visit Yosemite, think again. One of the best, and most often overlooked, times to visit the park is during the fall months.
Many people think that just because snow and ice come earlier in the mountains than elsewhere, that the roads and trails in Yosemite start closing early in the fall. In reality, most of the park stays open through October, and sometimes even into November if the weather stays fair. No matter what time of year you choose to visit the park, it’s always a good idea to check for road and trail closures before you leave home, that way you can make alternative plans.
If you’re still on the fence about whether you should plan a Yosemite adventure this season, check out these reasons why fall is the best time to visit the park.
Fewer Crowds

Back to school season, coupled with the cooler temperatures and the approaching holidays, means that the park sees far fewer visitors in October and November than during the busy summer months. This makes it a great time to visit some of Yosemite’s most popular attractions. Be sure to bring along your camera to take advantage of some tourist-free photo opportunities.
Cooler Temperatures

While low levels of rainfall and a lack of snow means that Yosemite’s waterfalls usually aren’t running very high in the fall, the season also brings with it cooler temperatures that are great for enjoying some of Yosemite’s great hiking trails. Take advantage of the thin crowds and the cool temps, and tackle the trails that are too crowded in the summer or that are simply too rigorous to take on when the weather’s hot. And don’t forget about your four-legged hikers; the empty trails and cooler weather
Also, don’t forget about your four-legged hikers; the empty trails and cooler weather make it a great time to take your dog hiking as well! But keep in mind that many parts of Yosemite are not open to dogs. Be sure to check the regulations on the trails you plan to visit ahead of time. Check out this post for more information on where you can and can’t bring fido along.
The scenery is changing

Yosemite may not be known for its fall colors, as most of the trees in the park are evergreens that don’t change color or lose their leaves. But the park is also home to several varieties of trees that do, including species of dogwoods, maples, oaks, aspens, and more. You’ll be able to see splashes of reds, yellows, and oranges in many places throughout the park, including Yosemite Valley, Glacier Point, and many of the park’s meadows.
If you’re planning a fall trip to Yosemite National Park, The Pines Resort at Bass Lake makes a great base camp for all of your adventures. There’s always something going on, especially in the fall, including craft fairs, festivals, and more!
