With November almost here, winter will be here before we know it! But if you think that means that your time is running out to visit Yosemite and Bass Lake, think again. Winter is an exciting and beautiful season in the Yosemite area. The snow blankets the park’s landmarks, making for incredible and unique views that rival the sunny summer months. Still not convinced? Here are just a few of the great activities that you can enjoy during a winter visit to Yosemite.
Enjoy the Region the Way the Locals Do
With the end of the busy summer season, the locals who live in and around the Bass Lake area take back their beautiful land. This is a time when they can enjoy their trails, parks, and more without the crowds of tourists that fill that region the rest of the year. If you want to see a side of Bass Lake and Yosemite that few people besides locals ever get to enjoy, winter is the perfect time to visit.

Even though Yosemite sees most of its visitors during the summer months, there are a number of reasons to visit the park during other seasons as well, and winter is no exception. Though it’s essential to plan ahead and you may need specialty supplies such as tire chains to navigate the roads in the snow, rain, and ice, it’s possible to enjoy a fun-filled trip and outdoor adventure to Yosemite during the winter.
While some roads and trails close due to snow and ice, others remain open year round. The roads leading through Yosemite Valley and Wawona stay open through the winter. Many of the trails in Yosemite Valley also stay open year round. Though water levels are low in Yosemite Falls and the park’s other waterfalls during the fall, once some snow has fallen in the mountains, the flow picks back up.

The emptiness of the park makes this a particularly great season for photographers looking to capture some unique shots of Yosemite’s landmarks without tourists getting in their shots. Wildlife that stays hidden during the busy summer months are often easy to spot during this time of year as well. With some planning and appropriate clothing, you can enjoy quiet hikes and sightseeing, and a side of Yosemite that few people ever get to enjoy. Winter is a truly special time in the park.
Hit the Slopes

What better way is there to enjoy the winter months in Yosemite than with some winter sports? At the Yosemite Ski and Snowboard Area, you can enjoy skiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing, tubing, and more. There are chairlifts to whisk you to the top of the slopes, terrain fields for snowboarders to practice their skills on, groomed cross country trails, and even a tubing area made for family fun. If you’re looking to learn a new sport or just improve your skills, you can take lessons and classes from the Ski School. Conditions permitting, the slopes will open on December 16 this year.
