ToBack in May when we were in the middle of covid pandemic, we have launched Families of Bass Lake Campaign. The main purpose of this campaign was to really get to know our families. We asked people to share their special stories and memories from Bass Lake and submit their applications. While the program was open to anyone who has stayed at the Pines Resort before, we were mainly looking to point out the most loyal patrons and advocates of our brand:
- Guests and families who have been coming for years and/or staying multiple times a year.
- Customers, who have a unique connection to our Resort.
- Those, who share special memories or fun traditions, related to Bass Lake and the Pines Resort.
We have received just a little over 50 applications and contacted 8 families to answer additional questions and finally picked 3 families to introduce to you.
Speckman Family
When Matthew Speckman first arrived at Bass Lake in 1996 for a work conference, he immediately got attracted to the area. Sparkling lake, towering pines and a charming village were captivating to him and he was determined to introduce the area to his family.
When the kids were younger, Speckmans visited twice a year, usually in the Fall/Winter and in the Spring. In fact, it became a family tradition, that here at Bass Lake is where the little ones are first exposed to snow. They still remember and talk about hours spent outside around the Village, building snowman, having snowball fights and after all the fun, warming up in their cozy chalet.
Bass Lake became their second home as soon as they visited as a family. They enjoy spacious chalets, abilty to have privacy, yet being so close to the lake, activities and restaurats. Speckman family celebrated multiple occassions at Bass Lake, birthday, anniversaries, personal accomplishments, as well as attended many Resort’s events like 4th of July Celebration on New Year’s Eve Party. They admitted however, that they do not need a special occasion to come to visit – ability to be here is a reason and occassion of it’s own.
When asked about three words that come to mind when he hears “Bass Lake”, Matthew said: Majestic, Tranquil & Inclusive
Over the years, they were able to stay at Bass Lake during all the seasons and cannot pick their favorite. Each season brings something different that the family enjoys, so any time there is an opportunity to come – they are on their way!
Spring offers the wonders of trees and flowers in full bloom, towering waterfalls and of course Moonbow. Summer offers watersports, summer concerts, shows and the awe inspiring fourth of July celebration. Fall provides us the tranquility of long hikes and the smell of fresh pine trees and relaxing in front of a fire. Winter offers a wonderland of manageable snowfall much closer than other destinations.
What is so special about the Pines Resort that makes you keep coming back?
Matthew: The memories. The visualizations of the serene lake, the towering pines and the friendly greeting of people set the stage for an enjoyable getaway. There are activities for all ages and having the world-renowned Yosemite in your backyard is a special attribute.
Have you attended any of our events and which one was your favorite?
Matthew: We have attended the fourth of July celebration, New Year’s Eve spectacular and a wedding at Bass Lake. All three offer a favorite flavor. The fireworks over the lake on Independence Day were magnificent. New Year’s Eve offered family activities with dancing and fireworks. The wedding of our friends at the place we love was so special. To gaze and be awe struck at the surroundings and hospitality while witnessing the vows of love cannot be described.
What’s your typical day like when at the Pines?
Matthew: We enjoy preparing breakfast and coffee in the chalet kitchen. Leisure is the key for us. We always walk among the amenities and hike the trails to take in the splendor of Bass Lake and its surroundings. Day trips to Yosemite are special as is lounging around the pool. Dinner at Ducey’s is a must. We always spend our evenings around the fireplace playing board or card games, unless we retreat to the private deck with our favorite beverage to watch and listen to the soothing sounds.
Any favorite spots in the area that you enjoy visiting?
Matthew: Yosemite stands out as the premier destination spot. However, the Sierra Vista Scenic Byway and the Sierra Heritage Scenic Byway offer some of the most stunning views in the region. All three are full day trips but you will arguably see the most gorgeous sceneries in California.
What’s your favorite meal from Ducey’s?
Matthew: We must start off with the Caprese and a glass of Pinot Noir. The seasoned prime rib is my kryptonite! I can’t pass this special of the house up while at Ducey’s. My wife loves the “Hibachi” roasted salmon.
Why should people come and visit Bass Lake?
Matthew: We truly consider Bass Lake and the Pines Resort a “hidden gem.” We like that Bass Lake offers a landscape immersed in history with breathtaking views, nature trails and activities for all ages and is within driving distance from anywhere is the state.
What advice would you give to people looking into coming to stay at Bass Lake? What is a “must bring” or “must do” while at Bass Lake?
Matthew: I would recommend researching which season suits their needs for a stay at Bass Lake. I would also recommend they research the activities offered at the site and at the nearby areas of interest. Do your research at home so you can maximize time during your stay.
A trip to Yosemite, a drive along the byways, a hike and a meal at Ducey’s will complete your stay. Bring your camera – the scenery is stunning.
If you want a destination, that includes majestic views and tranquil surroundings, Bass Lake should be on your radar.
