When was the last time you witnessed a beautiful sunset on Bass Lake, CA? Scratch that. When was the last time you witnessed the beauty of a sunset at all?
Truth is, the sun rises and sets daily but many of us can’t remember the last time we were able to witness and appreciate either. This is largely due to a couple of factors.

Urbanization
Urbanization refers to the growing number of people moving to urban areas.
In a recent blog post on the benefits of hosting offsite retreats, we lightly touched on urbanization and the effects it has on mental health:
“According to a recent study, urbanization “is associated with increased levels of mental illness, including depression.”
When living in an urban area, the ability to connect with nature on a regular basis quickly diminishes. Not because you don’t want to, but because the opportunity to do so rarely —if ever— presents itself.
Family, Career
With careers and family often taking priority over our personal wants and needs, scheduling time to go outside and witness a sunset may be challenging. After all, we all know how unpredictable life can be.
Still, with the many responsibilities, we have, taking the time to watch the sunset could be beneficial to your health. In fact, according to a study led by Jia Wei Zhang at the University of California, Berkeley, “Engagement with natural beauty moderates the positive relation between connectedness [sic] with nature and psychological well-being.”
Some other benefits of admiring the sunset as told by Psychology Today:
- Emotional well-being
- Concern for others
- Satisfaction with life
Now, it’s admittingly challenging to catch the sunset while you’re at home, feeding your kids and trying to get everyone in bed so you can have a few minutes to yourself. However, taking family vacations is a great way for everyone to fall off the grid and witness some beautiful sunsets.
Especially when you’re at Bass Lake.
